“Shaffelburg shines as Canada defeats Peru 2-0”

Jacob Shaffelburg’s impressive performance led the Canadian men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Peru in their second friendly match during the international break. Shaffelburg scored both goals in the first half, opening the scoring in the 19th minute and doubling the lead in the 35th minute. The match took place in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,619 at Montreal’s Stade Saputo on a sunny afternoon.

Daniel Jebbison provided an assist for the Canadian team, who are ranked 30th in the world. They had previously started the World Cup cycle with a 1-0 win against Chile. Canada dominated possession with 61% and outshot Peru 17-4, including 3 on target. This victory improved Canada’s record to 3 wins, 1 loss, and 0 draws against Peru.

Despite a shaky rendition of O Canada at the start of the match, the Canadian team quickly gained momentum. Notable plays included Nathan Saliba’s pass to Liam Millar in the first minute and a missed opportunity by Jonathan David in the 17th minute. Shaffelburg’s goals in the 19th and 35th minutes secured the win for Canada.

In a rare chance for Peru, Gianluca Lapadula had a shot go over the crossbar in the 57th minute. Canada’s coach, Jesse Marsch, made significant substitutions in the 62nd minute, showcasing the team’s depth. The match also saw the absence of several key Canadian players due to injuries.

Before the game, Samuel Piette, a central midfielder and CF Montreal captain, was honored by Canada Soccer for his achievements. Piette made his 70th appearance for the senior men’s national team during the match. The Canadian team will face the United States in their next match, followed by a Nations League quarterfinal in November.
