Gatineau Native Julien Leblanc Ready for UFC Fight Night

Julien Leblanc, a Gatineau native, has pursued a career in mixed martial arts since he was 16. Now in his early 30s, his MMA aspirations are becoming a reality. Earlier this year, Leblanc made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championships but faced a setback when he suffered a first-round submission due to a knee injury against Swiss fighter Robert Valentin.

Undeterred by this setback, Leblanc is ready to step back into the Octagon for the UFC Championship Fight Night in Edmonton this Saturday. During a training session at Patenaude gym in Gatineau, CBC Ottawa’s Giacomo Panico caught up with him for an interview.

When asked about his mindset during a match, Leblanc emphasized the importance of relying on instincts rather than overthinking. Describing his fighting style as that of a striker, he highlighted his love for striking in MMA, which involves using hands, feet, elbows, and knees.

Explaining his preference for striking, Leblanc attributed it to his background as a hockey goaltender, which gave him a natural ability to kick high with speed and flexibility. Despite starting his martial arts journey relatively late compared to some opponents, Leblanc believes that athleticism, quick learning, and dedication can propel anyone to compete at the highest level in MMA.

Leblanc expressed gratitude for his supportive fans, including his young children who cheer him on. Training in Gatineau and being a source of inspiration for aspiring fighters in the community holds special significance for him. Reflecting on how martial arts transformed his life by building his confidence and physical abilities, Leblanc emphasized the positive impact of the sport on personal growth and self-belief.
