The Calgary Zoo, managed by the Wilder Institute, is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident where a grizzly bear escaped its enclosure on Sunday morning. During a media briefing on Monday afternoon, Colleen Baird, the zoo’s director of animal care, health, and welfare, stated that a thorough review is being conducted to identify necessary habitat enhancements and risk mitigation measures.
Staff discovered that Fitz, a one-year-old rescued grizzly bear cub, had left his designated area during routine early morning checks before the zoo opened to the public. Baird mentioned that the animal care team promptly implemented emergency protocols, tranquilizing the bear shortly after, ensuring its well-being.
There was no public safety concern as the incident occurred before the zoo’s opening hours, and the bear remained in close proximity to its enclosure. The Wild Canada section, where the bears are housed, was temporarily closed but reopened later in the day.
Authorities from the Calgary Police responded to the situation, although the bear did not exhibit aggressive behavior and seemed more curious than threatening. The exact time of Fitz’s escape remains unknown, with zoo officials affirming that there was no evidence of overnight roaming based on security footage and lack of disturbance.
It is speculated that Fitz managed to escape by maneuvering above the enclosure’s barriers, which are approximately eight to 10 feet tall and equipped with internal hot wire. Baird emphasized the zoo’s multiple safety layers for animal containment, including a high barbed wire fence surrounding the entire facility.
Fitz and his sibling Turner have been relocated to a secure area within the zoo while further evaluations and improvements to the habitat are being considered based on the investigation’s outcomes. The two bear cubs were brought to the zoo last year after being orphaned due to their mother’s unfortunate demise near Diamond Valley.
