Halifax will continue its student transit pass initiative for the 2026-27 academic year, despite the province cutting its $1.2 million funding contribution in the latest budget announcement. The pass, which is accessible to eligible junior high and high school students, will be valid from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027, enabling unlimited travel on all Halifax Transit services, including buses, Access-A-Bus, and ferries.
While physical bus passes can be obtained upon request, the Halifax municipality has confirmed that the student transit pass will be distributed through the HFXGO app. Students at participating schools will receive instructions via their student email accounts on how to set up the pass.
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education will be financing transit passes for students attending five schools where utilizing public transit is deemed more practical than school buses. Additionally, the Nova Scotia Department of Opportunities and Social Development will be funding transit passes for over 1,700 students aged 13 to 18 who are linked to employment support and income assistance programs.
The city authorities have also announced that they will cover the costs of transit passes for all remaining grades 7-12 students, including those who are homeschooled or attend private schools. For students currently enrolled in the program, their passes will be extended until September 11, 2026, to ensure uninterrupted access to transit services while the new passes are being distributed, as per a news release from the Halifax municipality.
