Halifax Woman Falls Victim to Sophisticated Fraud Scheme

A woman in Halifax is recounting her ordeal as a victim of fraud in the hopes of raising awareness and preventing others from falling victim to scammers.

Candida Hadley’s encounter with fraud occurred during a casual meeting with a friend at a café in north-end Halifax. Upon realizing her wallet was missing after feeling her purse was lighter than expected, she suspected it had been stolen. As she prepared to freeze her cards, she received a call purportedly from Royal Bank, alerting her of suspicious activity on her account. The caller, posing as a bank representative, engaged her in a conversation that led her to disclose her PIN unknowingly to the thief.

Subsequently, Hadley, feeling uneasy about the call, canceled her cards, but it was too late. Within 30 minutes of the call, the fraudsters managed to make a $700 purchase at a local store and withdraw $500 in cash. They also attempted a $3,000 purchase at another retailer, which was unsuccessful.

In a further twist, Hadley received an automated call shortly after the theft incident, prompting her to confirm or deny a purchase of a MacBook Pro at a mall, suggesting a coordinated scam. Reflecting on the sophisticated nature of the scam, Hadley expressed shock at how seamlessly the theft and the phone call were orchestrated.

Despite her vigilance, Hadley fell victim to the scam due to the convincing nature of the call, emphasizing the need for caution when sharing personal information. She warns against divulging PINs and highlights the possibility of fake caller IDs.

While perplexed about how the thieves obtained her cellphone number, Hadley underscored the importance of staying alert and verifying the legitimacy of requests for personal information. Although her bank declined a refund due to her PIN disclosure, Halifax Regional Police are investigating the incident, which serves as a reminder of the prevalence of such scams.

Police spokesperson Marla MacInnis reiterated the need for vigilance, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding personal information and verifying the identity of individuals and organizations in all interactions. The incident underscores the need for individuals to exercise caution and skepticism when faced with requests for personal details, whether through phone calls, emails, or in-person interactions.
