Caitlin Clark, a standout player, contributed 24 points and seven assists, aiding Indiana in securing their fifth consecutive win. Brittney Sykes made a remarkable comeback for the Tempo, tallying 15 points, five assists, and two rebounds after being sidelined for two months due to injury. Despite Marina Mabrey’s impressive 22-point effort, Toronto faced their eleventh consecutive defeat. Aneesah Morrow, coming off the bench, set a new franchise record with a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Sykes had been absent from the lineup due to a left plantar fascia injury sustained during a game against the Fever in June. Toronto struggled without her, suffering ten consecutive losses during her absence. Previously in contention for a playoff spot, the Tempo now hold the third-worst record in the WNBA, surpassing only the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm, who have already been eliminated from postseason contention.
The Fever, known for their high-scoring prowess averaging 96.2 points per game, displayed their offensive dominance by shooting 44% from beyond the arc (11 for 25) and scoring 50 points in the paint. Despite Toronto trailing by as much as 17 points and never taking the lead, they showed promise with 22 second-chance points, outrebounding the opponents 41-32, and their bench outscoring Indiana 38-20.
A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Mabrey sank a three-pointer in the final moments, cutting the deficit to four points, only for the shot to be nullified by a palming violation by the referees.
Toronto’s offensive struggles persisted, with a field goal percentage of 39.1% (34 of 87) and a three-point shooting percentage of 32.4% (12 of 37).
Looking ahead, the Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Tempo will take on the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
