“Halifax’s Windsor St. Exchange Undergoes Major Construction”

Halifax’s Windsor Street exchange project is currently undergoing significant construction, with the closure of the Massachusetts Avenue ramp to Robie Street from the A. Murray MacKay Bridge scheduled until Nov. 27. The closure, which began on Monday, has resulted in increased traffic congestion in the area.

Megan Soroka, the program manager overseeing the project, explained that the closure is necessary due to extensive underground infrastructure replacement and regrading work to create a new exit to Bayne Street. This closure is expected to last for 10 weeks, enabling the construction of a direct exit to Bayne Street for future projects and detours.

The overall objective of the $180-million Windsor Street exchange project is to enhance traffic flow and safety in the area. Once completed by the end of 2029, drivers on the Bedford Highway will have a direct route to the MacKay Bridge, bypassing the intersection.

Soroka emphasized that the improvements will benefit various modes of transportation, including public transit, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The changes will also facilitate the movement of goods to and from the Port of Halifax.

Soroka acknowledged the anticipated increase in traffic due to the ramp closure and recent incidents on Dartmouth bridges, advising drivers to consider alternative routes such as Windsor or Barrington streets. For the latest updates on routes and disruptions, she recommended checking the traffic impact map on the city’s website.

The Windsor Street exchange project is a significant infrastructure development aimed at improving connectivity and traffic efficiency in Halifax.
