“Prince Edward Island Establishes 2.1% Cap on Annual Rent Increase”

Prince Edward Island’s residential tenancy director has established a 2.1 percent cap on the maximum annual rent increase, effective from January 1st. The Residential Tenancy Office determines the yearly allowable rent raise, which cannot exceed three percent as per provincial regulations. Factors such as changes in the consumer price index are considered in setting this limit, with input sought from both landlords and tenants.

The consumer price index reflects the cost fluctuations of commonly purchased goods and services on an annual basis. After reviewing 85 submissions from landlords and tenants, the office determined the 2027 rental increase. The majority of tenants preferred no hike due to the escalating cost of living and stagnant wages, while landlords highlighted increased operational expenses like maintenance, repairs, property taxes, and interest rates.

Tenants would bear the brunt of rising prices, as per the director’s observations. Landlords can request a rent increase above 2.1 percent, subject to approval from the P.E.I. Rental Office. If granted, the additional raise cannot surpass three percent, resulting in a maximum 5.1 percent hike in 2027. Rent adjustments are limited to once a year, and landlords must provide a three-month notice period for any increases.
