Hamilton voters will have more flexibility in the upcoming municipal election this fall as they can cast their ballot at any voting location within their ward, the city announced on Thursday. Voter information cards, currently being distributed in Hamilton households, now display available voting locations without specific assignments to individual voters.
Unlike previous years, voters are not required to bring their voter card to the voting location. Instead, they only need to present one form of identification showing their name and qualifying address. Election Day is set for Oct. 26, with voters having the freedom to vote at any designated location within their ward. Advance voting will also be an option on Oct. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, and 18.
Expanding its Ballot on Demand program, the city will offer temporary advance voting locations accessible to eligible voters from any ward. Launched during the 2022 municipal election, this initiative aims to enhance voter accessibility, particularly in communities with historically low turnout. City staff have been engaging in outreach and education sessions with various groups, including post-secondary students and individuals accessing health and social services.
The inaugural Ballot on Demand poll is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28, at Lime Ridge Mall, where eligible voters can cast their ballot from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. by providing a single identification document reflecting their name and qualifying address. Additional Ballot on Demand locations and dates include:
– Redeemer University, 777 Garner Rd. E. on Sept. 29
– McMaster University, 1280 Main St. W. on Oct. 2
– Mohawk College, 135 Fennell Ave. W. on Oct. 5
– Good Shepherd Venture Centre, 155 Cannon St. E. on Oct. 6
– Hamilton Regional Indian Centre, 34 Ottawa St. N. on Oct. 7

– YWCA Hamilton Café, 75 MacNab St. S. on Oct. 9
– Hamilton City Hall, 71 Main St. W. from Oct. 13-16 and Oct. 19-23
The city advises voters to check the official website for the latest updates on locations and timings before heading out to vote.
To participate in the election, voters must be at least 18 years old, Canadian citizens, and meet residency criteria such as living, owning, or renting property in Hamilton, or being the spouse of a resident. Voting options include selecting a mayor, city council members, and, where applicable, school board trustees.
