“Hibernia Project Donates $1.9M to Boost Math Support at Memorial University”

Memorial University has announced a substantial $1.9 million donation from the Hibernia Project to enhance math support for first-year students. The initiative, spearheaded by the Faculty of Science’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, will provide students with additional resources such as small group tutorials and review sessions. These support services are expected to be accessible starting this autumn.

Ivan Booth, the head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, emphasized the significance of mathematics and statistics across various fields. Building a strong mathematical foundation and instilling confidence in students to apply these skills in their future endeavors is a key objective for the university.

Basic math proficiency is essential for pursuing degrees in disciplines like science, technology, and engineering. Memorial University plans to introduce more assistance programs, including summer bridging programs, pre-semester boot camps, and revamped first-year courses in the future.

Janet Morrison, President and Vice-Chancellor of MUN, underscored the institution’s commitment to supporting students’ academic journey and ensuring a seamless transition to university life. The university expressed gratitude to the Hibernia Project for its investment, which aims to enhance the overall university experience for students.

The Hibernia Management and Development Company hopes that this investment will better equip students for successful employment post-graduation. Duncan Fitzpatrick, the President of Hibernia Management Development Company Ltd., emphasized the importance of investing in student success to cultivate a skilled workforce for the future.

The Education Minister of the province, Paul Dinn, commended the collaboration between Memorial University and the Hibernia Project, highlighting the importance of creating a conducive environment where mathematics serves as a gateway to success rather than a hindrance to achievement.

Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd., the operator of the Hibernia Project, is a consortium jointly owned by ExxonMobil Canada, Chevron Canada Resources, Suncor Energy Inc., Canada Hibernia Holding Corporation, Murphy Oil Company Ltd., and Equinor Canada Ltd.
