Memorial University has announced a significant boost in math support for students this year, thanks to a generous $1.9 million donation from the Hibernia Project. The initiative, spearheaded by the Faculty of Science’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, will offer various assistance, including small group tutorials and review sessions, with plans to make these resources available as early as this fall.
Highlighting the importance of mathematics and statistics across various fields, Ivan Booth, the head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, emphasized the aim of building a strong mathematical foundation to instill confidence in students for their future endeavors.
Noting that first-year math is crucial for pursuing degrees in science, technology, and engineering, MUN revealed that historically, 25% of students have struggled with the course. To address this issue, the university intends to introduce additional support mechanisms like summer bridging programs, pre-semester boot camps, and revamped first-year courses in the future.
MUN’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Janet Morrison, emphasized the institution’s commitment to enhancing students’ academic journey, stating that the new support initiatives will significantly improve the university experience at Memorial. The Hibernia Management and Development Company expressed its hope that this investment will aid students in transitioning successfully to the workforce post-graduation.

Education Minister Paul Dinn commended the joint efforts of MUN and the Hibernia Project in bolstering student success during the transition from high school to post-secondary education. The Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd., operator of the Hibernia Project, is collectively owned by ExxonMobil Canada, Chevron Canada Resources, Suncor Energy Inc., Canada Hibernia Holding Corporation, Murphy Oil Company Ltd., and Equinor Canada Ltd.
