“Immigrant Targeted in Racist Outburst in Halifax”

A man in Halifax reported being the target of a racist outburst over the weekend. Shalu Shajan, an immigrant from India, recounted the incident where a man carrying bagpipes deliberately struck his car and hurled racial slurs at him on Lower Water Street in downtown Halifax. Following a verbal altercation, the man intensified his aggression, directing racist remarks at Shajan and urging him to “go back to your country.”

Eyewitness Raven Fox corroborated the event, noting a heated exchange between the two individuals. Fox highlighted the racial undertones in the man’s comments, emphasizing a bias against permanent residents in Canada. The man with the bagpipes seemed to purposefully damage Shajan’s car, leading to a distressing situation for Shajan, who felt physically threatened by the man’s proximity and behavior.

Shajan, concerned for his safety, attempted to contact the authorities, prompting the man to retreat towards the waterfront. Subsequently, Shajan captured a photo of the man, reported the incident to Halifax Regional Police and the hate crime unit, and shared his experience on social media for awareness and assistance in identifying the perpetrator.

Law enforcement officials acknowledged the report and are investigating whether the encounter constitutes a hate crime. Shajan affirmed that the man’s racist language indicated a hate-motivated incident, prompting the police to inquire about pressing charges. Shajan expressed his determination to hold the individual accountable to prevent similar discriminatory acts.

While previous encounters have exposed Shajan to racist remarks, this incident marked the first time he feared for his physical well-being. His public disclosure aims to support the ongoing investigation and discourage future instances of racial discrimination. The Indo-Canadian Association of Nova Scotia expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the broader impact of hate crimes on affected individuals and communities.
