Thunder Bay native Krista Scharf, a seasoned curler, has signed on as skip for Team Despins for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Following the disbandment of her previous team in March, which had a successful decade-long run culminating in appearances at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Scharf is making a comeback to competitive curling.
Having represented both Ontario and Northern Ontario at the Scotties on twelve occasions, clinching two silver and two bronze medals, Scharf expressed her enthusiasm for rejoining the sport with Team Despins. She shared in an interview with CBC News that she had not anticipated playing again, as she had planned to focus on coaching her children. The invitation from Team Despins to join as a key player came at an opportune moment.
Team Despins approached Scharf a few weeks ago as they sought an additional player due to a back injury sidelining longtime team member Nicole Westlund-Stewart since January. Scharf embraced the chance to engage in competitive play while balancing her commitment to family and flexibility with the sport and travel.
Acknowledging the significant transition of joining a new team, Scharf emphasized her intent to contribute her experience to the team and assist her new teammates. With the team setting their sights on competing for the Northern Ontario championship and securing a spot at the 2027 Scotties, Scharf highlighted the importance of rigorous practice to achieve their goals.
The team roster includes Abby Deschene, Robyn Despins at third, Deschene at second, Rebecca Carr at lead, and Westlund-Stewart as fifth. As they gear up for the upcoming season, the team is focused on honing their skills and building chemistry to compete at the highest level.
