Environment Canada has issued a weather alert indicating the possibility of severe thunderstorms, including potential tornado development in eastern Alberta. The agency mentioned that funnel clouds in the area might touch the ground and transform into brief landspout tornadoes. Reports have indicated that funnel clouds in eastern Alberta are near the ground level. The risk of landspout tornadoes is expected to persist until early evening.
In the event of a tornado or a tornado warning, Environment Canada advised individuals to seek shelter indoors in a room on the lowest floor, away from windows and exterior walls. Suitable locations include basements, bathrooms, stairwells, or interior closets. The agency recommended moving from mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers, or temporary structures to a sturdy building. As a last resort, individuals were advised to lie in a low spot and shield their heads from potential flying debris.
Additionally, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement before noon indicating the possibility of funnel clouds in other regions of central and northern Alberta. Weak landspout tornadoes could also form in these areas due to weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. Residents were urged to take any funnel cloud sightings seriously and prepare to take cover if necessary, as these formations often appear suddenly.
While the weak rotation associated with funnel clouds is usually not hazardous near the ground, there is a chance it could intensify, leading to a weak landspout tornado. Although landspout tornadoes typically do not cause significant damage, they can still pose risks such as toppling trees, damaging roofs, or scattering debris over short distances. Environment Canada stated that conditions conducive to funnel cloud development in central and northern Alberta will persist until evening, with watches and warnings being issued if the risk of landspout tornadoes increases.
