Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, is rumored to be entering the mobile phone market with cost-effective plans to compete with major network providers. To access these budget-friendly phone deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account.
This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by Lidl, which not only involves offering mobile services but also includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide. Following the paths of other non-traditional players in the telecom industry like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to provide affordable phone plans.
While Lidl already offers this service in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are plans to expand to countries such as the UK, US, France, and Spain. Schwarz Group, the owner of Lidl, has partnered with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), utilizing existing infrastructure for its mobile offerings.
In addition to its telecom venture, Lidl is planning to open over 50 new stores in the upcoming year, creating 2,000 jobs in locations like Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury. These expansion efforts are part of Lidl’s commitment to supporting local communities and providing access to affordable and nutritious food.
The Schwarz Group will also acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL, enhancing its presence in the digital realm. With investments in tech sectors like cloud computing and cybersecurity, Schwarz Group’s digital vision is evolving rapidly. Analysts predict that Lidl’s entry into new markets could pose a challenge to established telecom providers due to competitive pricing and convenience.
Employment minister Kate Dearden praised Lidl’s investment for creating thousands of quality jobs with fair wages, benefiting communities across the country. This strategic move aligns with Lidl’s mission to make healthy food accessible to all while driving economic growth and innovation.
