Lindsey Vonn Updates Fans After Third Surgery

Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn provided an update on her condition post her third surgery following a serious crash that shattered her Olympic aspirations at the Milan‑Cortina Games. Vonn, 41, sustained a leg fracture during the event and was swiftly transported to the hospital after a harrowing accident, just days after tearing her ACL.

During the women’s downhill event, Vonn, a member of Team USA, collided with a gate, leading to a loss of balance and a subsequent crash on the slope a mere 13 seconds into her run. Following the incident, she underwent extensive medical care before being airlifted to a nearby medical facility for further attention.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday evening, Vonn shared, “I underwent my third surgery today, and it was successful. The definition of success has shifted significantly for me recently. Progress is being made, albeit slowly, and I remain optimistic about my recovery. Grateful for the exceptional medical team, as well as the unwavering support from my friends, family, and the global community.”

She also extended congratulations to her fellow teammates and all the inspiring athletes from Team USA, who continue to motivate and uplift her spirits during this challenging period.

Subsequent confirmations indicated that Vonn would require multiple surgeries to address her leg injury, with the recent procedure being the third in line. Although a prolonged recovery phase lies ahead, there is hope that Vonn could potentially return to the skiing slopes within a year.

Federica Brignone, another skier who faced severe leg fractures and an ACL tear during the 2025 Italian Championships, managed to make a comeback after just 10 months, competing against Vonn on the Olympia piste in Cortina.

Andrea Panzeri, the head of the Medical Commission of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, highlighted, “Assessing the situation without X‑rays is challenging. The complexity of the fracture could potentially impact an athlete’s career regardless of age. However, Brignone’s remarkable recovery despite a serious fracture sets a positive precedent.”

Orthopaedic surgeon Filippo Pierfrancesco Calanna from Milan’s Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre emphasized the influence of age on recovery rates, noting that while Vonn possesses exceptional physical attributes, age can affect the pace of recovery. Motivation and mindset play crucial roles, with the risk of early arthritis development posing potential long-term challenges, including joint function limitations and discomfort.

Despite Vonn’s history of leg injuries, including a partial knee implant, there may be implications for her recovery timeline. The road to rehabilitation is anticipated to be challenging, but with Vonn’s determination and the support of her medical team, a positive outcome remains within reach.
