Conservation agencies are alerting the public about an increased flood risk due to a severe storm moving across the London area on Wednesday afternoon. The heaviest rainfall, expected between 4 and 8 p.m., could reach up to 60 millimeters, as per Environment Canada.
The Kettle Creek Conservation Authority, responsible for the watershed south of London to Lake Erie, advises residents to exercise caution near creeks and streams during the approaching rain. Recent rainfall has already caused a slight rise in water levels. Jennifer Dow, the authority’s water resources supervisor, explained that the wet ground conditions mean that most of the new rainfall may run off into water bodies instead of being absorbed.
Areas receiving over 50 millimeters of rain are particularly at risk of flash floods and localized flooding, according to the Kettle Creek Conservation Authority. Intense downpours could also overwhelm local drainage systems. To mitigate risks around homes, residents are encouraged to clear storm drains of leaves and debris.
For those living near waterways or in flood-prone areas, moving property to higher ground is advisable to reduce flood impacts. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, covering the watershed north of London, issued a flood outlook on Monday due to the ground being saturated from the 150 millimeters of rain received in August.
Eleanor Heagy, a UTRCA spokesperson, highlighted the potential for overland flooding if the region experiences heavy downpours. She cautioned about potential drain and culvert overflows but mentioned that the situation remains uncertain until the storm hits.
