The London Family Court Clinic has introduced a new remote testimony suite to assist children involved in the legal system in providing evidence without the need to physically attend court. This initiative aims to create a safe and trauma-informed environment for young individuals, enabling them to testify via CCTV technology. Joelene Bamford, the clinic’s executive director, highlighted the suite’s goal of alleviating the anxiety often associated with court proceedings by allowing children to testify from a secure location.
Research indicates that children are able to provide more effective testimony when they feel secure and less anxious. By testifying in a comfortable and familiar setting, children can articulate their experiences more clearly and comprehensively. The Department of Justice Canada has reviewed studies showing that tools like closed-circuit television can reduce stress for child witnesses, with no significant difference in the accuracy of their testimonies compared to in-person appearances.
In addition to the remote testimony suite, the London Family Court Clinic offers Beacon House, a Child and Youth Advocacy Centre where young individuals can interact with law enforcement in a child-friendly environment. Bamford emphasized the importance of providing a space separate from traditional legal settings to minimize stress and avoid retraumatization for children involved in legal proceedings.
Furthermore, the clinic has a specially trained facility dog named NSD Virgil, who plays a supportive role by accompanying children during court preparations, attending court sessions, and being present during interactions with police. This canine companion aims to provide comfort and assistance to young individuals navigating the complexities of the justice system.
The London Family Court Clinic, a longstanding non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children, youth, and families in legal processes, is organizing its second annual fundraiser, “Stronger Together: LFCC at the Met,” on November 25th at Metropolitan United Church. The event aims to raise funds to sustain the clinic’s essential clinical services for children and youth, furthering its mission of providing crucial support to those involved in the justice system.
