A large African spurred tortoise named Molly was discovered wandering around Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, far from its native Sahara desert habitat. Staff at the marsh were puzzled by the unexpected sighting of the 36-kilogram tortoise, initially mistaking it for a native snapping turtle. The tortoise was rescued by nature interpreter Gillian Malchuk and her colleagues after receiving reports of the unusual creature in the area.
Despite their surprise, the staff quickly located Molly in the parking lot, where she had wandered off course from her family’s yard, located 20 kilometers away. The tortoise was well cared for by the marsh staff, who fed her cucumbers and flower petals before reuniting her with her relieved owners.
Molly’s adventurous journey to the marsh remains a mystery, with theories suggesting she may have been mistaken for a wetland inhabitant by a passerby or possibly traveled the distance on her own. Regardless of the circumstances, Molly’s safe return home brought joy to her family, who had raised her for over 15 years.
