Police have revealed that a male individual is set to face charges following the reported sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl at a well-known park in Yellowknife during the weekend. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the child was engaging in recreational activities at Somba K’e park when an unfamiliar male took her into the vegetation and committed a sexual assault. The young girl managed to flee and promptly informed her parent, who then contacted law enforcement. The RCMP disclosed that the occurrence was reported at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
A news release stated that law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the location and apprehended the suspect without any complications. The arrested individual, identified as Peter Mackenzie, aged 52, is being charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, and exposing genital organs to a minor under 16 years old. Authorities clarified that Mackenzie and the child have no prior connection, emphasizing that the incident appears to be an isolated event.
In a cautionary message, the Yellowknife RCMP emphasized the importance of supervising young children in public settings to prevent such incidents. Following a bail hearing, Mackenzie was remanded into custody.
