“Man Jailed for Faking Disability, Attacking Guard”

A young man has been sentenced to jail for pretending to be handicapped to steal beer from a supermarket and then violently attacking a security guard. Davey Brown, aged 19, was caught throwing stolen beer cans at a Sainsbury’s employee in Staplehurst after they tried to stop him from leaving the store.

The series of crimes began when Brown’s car collided with another vehicle on Four Elms Road in Edenbridge. Following the collision on June 3, 2025, Brown drove recklessly towards the victim before fleeing the scene, running a red light.

After the collision, Brown arrived at Sainsbury’s in Station Road, where he posed as a wheelchair user with the help of an accomplice. He concealed two crates of beer under a jacket on his lap and attempted to exit without paying.

Footage captured the moment when a security guard confronted the teenager, who reacted by assaulting the guard and hurling beer bottles and cans at him. Another store employee was injured during the altercation by one of the thrown items. Brown tried to escape but was apprehended by patrols within half an hour, during which he verbally abused the arresting officers.

Brown, residing in Winch’s Garth, Staplehurst, was charged with multiple offenses including robbery, affray, damaging property, assault, and driving without insurance. He admitted guilt at Maidstone Crown Court and received a three-year and one-month prison sentence on November 6, along with a driving disqualification.

Additionally, a 17-year-old boy connected to the incident was arrested and sentenced to six months in a young offenders’ institution on July 12. PC Ricky Strong, the investigating officer, characterized Brown as a violent individual who posed a threat to public safety. Strong emphasized that Brown’s imprisonment would prevent him from endangering others for a significant period.
