A copper-zinc mine in northeast Saskatchewan, identified by Ottawa as a project of national significance, is close to reaching commercial production. Eldorado Gold provided an update on the McIlvenna Bay underground mine during an event in Saskatoon, stating that copper concentrate was produced in June and zinc concentrate in July, with plans to commence commercial production by the end of the third quarter of this year.
Due to the critical minerals it will yield, the federal government designated the mine as a project of national importance and referred it to the Major Projects Office last year. Eldorado Gold President Christian Milau acknowledged that this designation facilitated the project’s progress towards completion.
Milau emphasized the challenges and risks associated with mining industry permitting processes globally, highlighting the advantage of receiving coordinated attention from both provincial and federal authorities, a cooperation that remains a challenge in many countries.
The company has amassed over 400,000 tonnes of material for processing at the mine located on the south end of Hanson Lake, approximately 460 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon and 96 kilometers west of Creighton, Saskatchewan. Eldorado Gold acquired the McIlvenna Bay project through its acquisition of Foran Mining in April, estimating a total capital budget slightly exceeding $1 billion.
Projections indicate that the mine could generate 41 million pounds of copper, 54 million pounds of zinc, 20,000 ounces of gold, and 444,000 ounces of silver over an anticipated 18-year operational span. These critical minerals have applications in various industries such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, healthcare, aerospace, and others, with a significant portion undergoing smelting in Quebec.
Since 2024, the federal government has contributed over $200 million through diverse funds for different project aspects. Federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson underlined the pivotal role of McIlvenna Bay in Canada’s critical mineral strategy and in bolstering the nation’s economic independence during the Saskatoon event.
The mine operates within the traditional territory of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, which entered into an economic collaboration agreement with Foran Mining in 2023, offering training, contracting opportunities, and financial advantages to its members and businesses. Currently, McIlvenna Bay employs 380 full-time workers, a number expected to rise to around 450 upon commercial production commencement, with around 34% of the workforce being Indigenous.
Eldorado Gold is actively engaged in exploration activities in the Flin Flon Greenstone Belt, a region described as one of Canada’s most mineral-rich areas. Milau expressed that McIlvenna Bay signifies the beginning of larger plans, with ambitions to develop multiple mines within the expansive 1,400 square kilometer property.
