“Mike Layton Declares Candidacy for University-Rosedale Ward”

Former Toronto city councilor Mike Layton has declared his candidacy to represent University-Rosedale ward once again after a four-year break from municipal office. In a social media post on Monday, Layton expressed his desire to contribute to electing a progressive mayor and council to drive significant change in the upcoming municipal election. Emphasizing the need to create an affordable and prideful city for all residents, Layton highlighted his commitment to environmental advocacy and road safety initiatives during his previous term from 2010 to 2022.

Having decided not to seek re-election in the last municipal race to prioritize family time, Layton is now focused on advocating for affordable housing, improved transit, and the installation of solar panels to reduce fossil fuel dependency if re-elected. Notably, Layton’s stepmother, Olivia Chow, is the current mayor of Toronto, with a family legacy deeply rooted in municipal and federal politics, including the late Jack Layton’s prominent role in Toronto council and the New Democratic Party leadership.

The competition for the University-Rosedale ward councilor position includes 10 candidates, with incumbent Dianne Saxe securing her seat following Layton’s departure. For a comprehensive list of candidates vying for the role, interested individuals can access the city’s official website.
