Halifax Mooseheads forward, Paul Sintschnig, relies on teammate Nico Uschan for support during intense moments on the ice. The Austrian rookies have been friends for over six years and have played on several teams together. Sintschnig, aged 17, was the second overall pick in the CHL Import Draft this year, while 19-year-old defenseman Uschan was selected 81st.
Sintschnig expressed gratitude for Uschan’s on-ice protection, likening it to having a big brother. Uschan not only watches out for Sintschnig during games but also provides off-ice support, encouraging him through tough shifts.
As the second pick in the import draft, Sintschnig faces high expectations to contribute to the team. Currently, he ranks fifth in team scoring with six points from nine games. Sintschnig aims to play in the NHL but tries not to dwell on the pressure.
Uschan, acknowledging the stress on Sintschnig in his draft year, strives to assist him as much as possible in handling expectations. Sintschnig copes by discussing his experiences with others, including Uschan, to alleviate pressure.
The duo’s biggest adjustment to Canadian hockey has been adapting to the smaller ice surfaces. Sharing a billet family has eased their transition away from home. Their presence marks the first time Austrians have played for the Mooseheads in 32 years, as teams can now have three European imports per season.
While their paths will soon diverge, with Uschan eyeing U.S. college hockey after his junior eligibility ends and Sintschnig pursuing the NHL dream, they cherish their time playing together. They enjoy the larger crowds in Canada compared to back home and appreciate the supportive atmosphere.
The Mooseheads rookies are relishing their time together, with Sintschnig valuing the higher attendance and enthusiastic fans.
