Joan Phillip, the New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Vancouver-Strathcona and the spouse of Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, has passed away. The UBCIC issued a statement announcing the peaceful passing of Phillip, also known as Amshen, on Friday afternoon at the age of 74. Although the exact cause of death was not disclosed, the UBCIC suggested donating to the B.C. Cancer Society in lieu of sending floral tributes. Phillip was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing, as confirmed by the UBCIC.
“Joan peacefully departed this afternoon, enveloped by the love of her life,” expressed the UBCIC. British Columbia Premier David Eby expressed condolences, indicating that the NDP caucus and staff share in the grieving process with Phillip’s family. Eby recognized Phillip as a significant and respected leader, acknowledging her impact on various communities. He also highlighted her valued presence in the legislature, transcending political affiliations.
Recognized as an Indigenous leader, Phillip played a pivotal role in influencing the NDP’s decision to refrain from suspending portions of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA). Initially elected in a 2023 Vancouver byelection, Phillip secured re-election in the subsequent general election in British Columbia the following year.
