Oldest Land Animal, 194-Year-Old Tortoise’s Genome Surprises

A 194-year-old tortoise named Jonathan, an Aldabra giant tortoise, holds the title as the oldest-known land animal, surpassing most giant tortoises by about a century. Researchers delved into Jonathan’s genome in a recent study led by Dr. Stephen Clark from the longevity nonprofit Kallel. They discovered that specific parts of Jonathan’s genome responsible for gene regulation mirrored those of five-year-old tortoises. The findings were detailed in the journal Science Advances.
