One Week Left to File for Fall Municipal Election

With just one week remaining, individuals interested in participating in the upcoming municipal election this fall must ensure they submit their necessary paperwork on time. Scheduled for October 26, the election will involve voting for various positions including city and township councillors, mayors, school board trustees, and regional councillors in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge.

Natalia Chebel, the deputy clerk and manager of legislative services for the City of Waterloo, emphasized the importance of not waiting until the last minute to file paperwork. While the clerk’s office has multiple staff members available to assist with processing paperwork, candidates should allocate enough time to address any missing information or signatures.

To run for office, individuals must collect signatures to accompany their paperwork, provide identification, proof of residency, and pay a fee, which amounts to $200 for mayor candidates and $100 for other positions. Nomination papers will be accepted until 2 p.m. on Friday, August 21.

In Waterloo region, the absence of electing a regional chair will mark a notable change in this fall’s election. Instead, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Rob Flack will appoint the next regional chair post-election. Speculation suggests that a local elected mayor may also serve as regional chair, but Premier Doug Ford has not confirmed this possibility.

Across different municipalities, incumbent mayors are seeking re-election while new candidates have emerged in various races. The list of candidates continues to expand as the filing deadline approaches, reflecting the growing interest in local governance positions.
