In response to the United States’ announcement of counter-tariffs, the mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec, reiterated their commitment on Tuesday to enhance economic collaboration between the two cities. Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and Gatineau Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette signed a fresh economic cooperation agreement, establishing a dedicated economic zone covering the National Capital Region.
Mayor Sutcliffe emphasized the importance of elevating the level of partnership between the cities, citing existing strong foundations. This move follows the breakdown of the Canada-U.S. trade deal, leading to significant tariffs on various Canadian goods.
Addressing the persistent barriers to interprovincial trade, Mayor Sutcliffe stressed the necessity of eliminating bureaucratic obstacles hindering businesses on both sides of the Ottawa River. The newly signed pact also includes commitments to enhance transportation connections, boost tourism, support the defense and cybersecurity sectors, and foster other collaborative opportunities.
Mayor Marquis-Bissonnette highlighted the agreement’s intent to strengthen the economy and reduce barriers between the provinces. The joint efforts come as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government unveiled counter-tariffs on comparable U.S. products.
Canada also disclosed a $7.5 billion support package for affected workers and businesses, encompassing expanded employment insurance, non-repayable federal loans, and other assistance programs. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized the significance of strengthening domestic initiatives for economic growth.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced initiatives to bolster local businesses and workers, aligning with the broader goal of fostering a robust economy. Mayor Sutcliffe expressed optimism about the premier’s support for enhancing the economic landscape in Ottawa.
The joint Ottawa-Gatineau committee, established under the new agreement, will oversee its implementation. Mayor Sutcliffe did not specify a timeline for the agreement’s enforcement but emphasized the shared commitment to driving economic prosperity in the region.
