In the midst of filming the Netflix adaptation of Carley Fortune’s book “This Summer Will Be Different,” captivating landscapes of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) are set to grace the screen. Tourism P.E.I. has introduced artistically crafted benches by Mel Burke from Black Cat Woodcraft at key locations featured in the popular novel. These benches, as per a provincial news release, aim to offer a fresh “literary tourism experience” that honors the Island’s natural beauty and local communities.
Designed to harmonize with the coastal surroundings, Burke expressed that the benches mirror the shapes of sand dunes, waves, and beaches, seamlessly blending into the existing landscape. These benches are part of a developing “literary trail” that enhances the connection between the story and its inspiring locations. The initial benches are currently placed at Basin Head Provincial Park and Point Prim Lighthouse, with plans for two more installations soon.
In Fortune’s narrative, protagonist Lucy Ashby visits P.E.I. and encounters Felix “Wolf” Clark, who happens to be the younger brother of Lucy’s best friend, Bridget. Despite her efforts to avoid Felix during her subsequent visits, their paths intertwine, adding a layer of complexity to their relationship over time.
Crafted from cedar with seating on both sides, the benches promote interaction between individuals facing different directions, symbolizing a natural “meet cute” concept that aligns with the book’s romantic theme. Looking ahead, Tourism P.E.I. intends to collaborate with Fortune to pinpoint additional locations that resonate with her novel’s essence.
Burke shared that the bench installations incurred a cost of approximately $7,000, emphasizing the enriching experience of translating creativity into tangible forms inspired by literature. She drew parallels between the book’s exploration of career choices and her own journey as an artisan, finding a personal connection with the protagonist’s pursuit of artistic fulfillment.
