“P.E.I. Music Community Unites Against Transphobia”

Prince Edward Island’s music community is rallying together in response to a controversy at a Charlottetown venue where a transgender musician was denied access to the women’s washroom. Vancouver band Rougaroux had to cancel their performance at Sportsman’s Club after singer Marina Hanly, a transgender woman, was turned away from using the women’s facilities.

Members of the musical trio Absolute Losers, including Sam Langille, expressed disappointment over the incident, emphasizing that such actions do not represent the welcoming nature of the province’s music scene. Several bands, including Coyote and Sweet Gale, have also decided to cancel their shows at the venue in solidarity.

The music community’s response has been resolute, with many artists taking a stand against the discriminatory incident. Music P.E.I. issued a statement affirming its commitment to only collaborating with venues that provide inclusive environments for all artists and audiences. The P.E.I. Human Rights Commission underscored the importance of respecting individuals’ gender identity in public spaces and highlighted the broader implications of denying access to facilities based on gender identity.

Despite calls for change, Sportsman’s Club has yet to address the issue publicly. Artists involved have made it clear that any potential changes at the venue would need to be substantial and genuine in order to rebuild trust and support within the community. Moving forward, the music scene is united in advocating for inclusivity and standing up against discrimination.
