Federal Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre visited Prince Edward Island this week for the party’s Atlantic caucus gathering. During his time there, he engaged with supporters at a Charlottetown pub on Tuesday and conducted a press briefing on Wednesday. Poilievre highlighted the pressing issue of affordability, citing concerns from Islanders regarding the high costs of housing, heating, and food.
In his remarks, Poilievre mentioned conversations with Maritime youth who expressed their struggles in affording a home, emphasizing the disparity between the treatment of the working class and the Liberal government’s policies. He criticized the government for providing benefits to certain groups while burdening Canadians with taxes, regulations, and elevated prices.
Poilievre also addressed the ongoing challenges related to crime, criticizing the government’s focus on law-abiding firearm owners instead of tackling rampant criminal activities. He raised concerns about the state of immigration, stating that it has put immense strain on jobs, housing, and healthcare services in the country.
Touching on recent developments, Poilievre welcomed the temporary suspension of 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods by U.S. President Donald Trump. He expressed relief at the tariff pause and stressed the importance of finalizing a favorable trade agreement that includes the elimination of tariffs. Poilievre reiterated the Conservative Party’s willingness to collaborate with all parties to secure beneficial outcomes for Canada.
Furthermore, Poilievre advocated for streamlined approval processes for major projects, emphasizing the need to prioritize Canada’s interests. When questioned about the historical electoral challenges faced by the federal Conservatives in P.E.I., Poilievre emphasized his commitment to addressing affordability issues on the island.
He underscored the importance of ensuring that young people in Prince Edward Island can afford homes and reiterated the party’s goal of making the province a place where families can comfortably live, own homes, handle mortgages, purchase groceries, and enjoy regular meals without financial strain.
