“PM Starmer Secures Future of World Snooker Championship”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to provide financial support to secure the future of the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible in Sheffield. The current contract for the venue to host the tournament is nearing its end.

Local council leaders are eager to retain the championship at The Crucible, although Barry Hearn, the president of Matchroom Sport, has hinted at the possibility of exploring alternative venues.

The government has intervened by offering funding, following a recent visit by Starmer to The Crucible to discuss the tournament’s future with local authorities and partners.

A source mentioned by The Sheffield Star stated that negotiations are progressing rapidly, with the Prime Minister’s involvement adding significant momentum to the discussions. There is optimism about the event’s continuation in Sheffield, emphasizing the importance of government support.

The Crucible has been the traditional home of the Snooker World Championships since 1977, but uncertainties have arisen due to contractual issues. Hearn has raised the potential of Saudi Arabia hosting the tournament if his demands for increased prize money are not met.

Hearn emphasized the need for collaboration between Sheffield and the government to ensure the event’s sustainability in the UK. He stressed the importance of aligning financial aspects with the tournament’s significance.

The 2026 World Snooker Championship is scheduled to commence on April 18 and will conclude on May 4. Chinese player Zhao Xintong enters the upcoming edition as the defending champion, having triumphed over Mark Williams in last year’s final.
