“Voters in Gorton and Denton Decide Fate of Two-Child Rule”

When voters head to the polls in Gorton and Denton this Thursday, they hold the future of over 6,000 local children in their hands. These youngsters are set to benefit on April 1st as the despised two-child rule is set to be abolished, potentially providing nearly an additional £70 per week for some low-income families.

Child poverty remains a significant issue, affecting nearly half of all children, specifically 48%, across the constituency. In Longsight, the situation is dire, with a staggering 73% of children growing up in poverty.

The upcoming changes by the Labour government, aimed at being child-friendly, are anticipated to significantly reduce these distressing figures come April. As a result, children are expected to be better prepared to excel in their academic endeavors.

With the implementation of more breakfast clubs, free school meals, and the forthcoming establishment of additional Sure Start centers, the government’s campaign against poverty is taking shape. This initiative aims to uplift children from impoverished conditions, opening up a realm of new opportunities for them.

Recently, the Reform party expressed their desire to do away with the two-child rule. Interestingly, Robert Jenrick, now serving as their shadow chancellor, previously supported the abolition in the House of Commons. However, there is now a shift in their stance, indicating a potential reversal that could push children back into poverty.

Contrary to the Reform party’s claims that the beneficiaries of these policies are lazy, unemployed parents, statistics reveal a different reality. Six out of ten children affected by this policy for almost a decade have at least one working parent. Furthermore, another 3 out of 10 children are either too young, ill, or disabled, making it challenging for their mothers to work or have a parent with a disability themselves.

With the vast majority of children in households where the parents are striving to make ends meet, the negative portrayal of work-shy, irresponsible parents by right-wing propaganda is unfounded and morally reprehensible.

The upcoming by-election presents a pivotal choice – to support children’s ongoing journey out of poverty with Labour’s local candidate Angeliki Stogia or revert to the previous Tory-led years of hardship.
