Prince Edward Island is currently under a rainfall alert issued by Environment Canada due to heavy rain and strong winds sweeping through the region. Flash floods have impacted various areas, leading to the closure of South Greenwood Drive in Summerside from Notre Dame Street onwards until further notice.
Summerside experienced rainfall ranging from 93 to 114 millimetres between Thursday night and Saturday morning, while Bonshaw registered the highest rainfall on the island at 127 millimetres, as reported by CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland. Wind speeds reached 50 to 80 km/h across the province in the last 24 hours, with peak gusts hitting 89 km/h in East Point on Friday night.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported incidents of fallen trees throughout the island, and power outages impacted around 1,500 Maritime Electric customers, with 378 still without electricity as of 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. An additional 20 to 40 millimetres of rain is expected on Saturday.
Rainfall is forecasted to ease off on Sunday, although northerly winds will persist with gusts of up to 70 km/h. Conditions are anticipated to improve on Sunday night into early Monday as winds subside and showers diminish. Environment Canada cautions drivers against attempting to navigate flooded roads.
