“Pumpkin Spice Fatigue Spurs Appetite for New Fall Flavors”

Pumpkin spice, a popular seasonal trend, has been a significant economic success story. In 2023, U.S. sales of pumpkin spiced products reached $1.1 billion according to NielsonIQ. However, despite its long-standing presence in autumn-themed foods like pies and coffees, pumpkin spice seems to be losing its charm. Research by Rubix Foods revealed that 47 percent of respondents considered pumpkin spice overrated, with 25 percent stating they were completely tired of it.

As a result, there is a growing interest in flavors like caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and masala chai. Robyn Armstrong, a pastry chef at Wildcraft Restaurant in Waterloo, noted the shift towards more caramelly and mapley flavors away from the traditional pumpkin spice offerings.

To cater to those fatigued by pumpkin spice, chefs Armstrong and Casey Ng of Nibble and Nosh in Kitchener suggest five alternatives for fall flavors:

1. Masala chai, with its rich blend of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and ginger, offers a cozy complexity to baked goods.
2. Sticky toffee pudding, a British favorite, features a moist sponge cake with dates soaked in toffee sauce.
3. Apple compote, combining warm spices and fruity tang, is a versatile dessert option.
4. Brown sugar corn custard, a global delight made with corn and brown sugar, pairs well with peach compote.
5. Crème brûlée, a classic dessert with a sweet creamy base and a caramelized sugar top, offers a decadent treat.

These alternatives provide a refreshing change for those seeking new fall flavors beyond the traditional pumpkin spice options.
