“Quebec Grower Todd Kline Gears Up for Giant Pumpkin Competition”

Todd Kline, an experienced produce grower with over four decades of expertise, has a knack for maximizing his crop yields. Hailing from Shawville, Quebec, Kline has made a name for himself by setting national records with his oversized fruits and vegetables, including massive tomatoes and prize-winning watermelons. However, it’s with pumpkins that he has truly honed his skills.

Recently, Kline snagged the top prizes at competitions in Ontario with two enormous pumpkins, and he is now gearing up for another shot at victory in Wellington on October 17. He emphasized the need to showcase a different pumpkin at each competition to stay competitive.

During an interview with CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning, Kline showcased his impressive pumpkins, highlighting the key strategies for outperforming rivals at weigh-offs. Describing his pumpkins as typically measuring around five and a half feet in each dimension, he likened their weight to that of a small car.

At the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest, Kline’s winning pumpkin weighed an impressive 700 kilograms (1,542.5 pounds), earning him $3,200 in prize money. Another triumph came in Woodbridge, Ontario, with a pumpkin tipping the scales at 697 kilograms (1,536 pounds), grown from one of his proprietary seeds.

Gardening has been a lifelong passion for Kline, who used to exhibit his finest produce at The Shawville Fair. He recalled starting with conventional vegetables like tomatoes and sweet corn until he received pumpkin seeds from fellow fair attendees, sparking his love for growing pumpkins.

Managing and transporting such massive pumpkins is no easy feat, as Kline utilizes a specialized tripod apparatus with straps and a chain hoist to load them onto trailers, a challenging task, particularly with larger pumpkins.

Despite the potential to sell his prized pumpkin seeds, Kline prefers to gift them to friends and community members, emphasizing the joy and camaraderie that comes with the hobby. As he prepares for the upcoming weigh-off in Wellington, Kline remains optimistic about securing another victory and eagerly anticipates participating in the event’s celebratory parade with his pumpkins.
