Thunder Bay Mayoral Candidate Calls for Removal of Strong Mayor Powers

In the run-up to Thunder Bay’s municipal election, a mayoral contender, Peter Diedrich, is advocating for the removal of the city’s strong mayor powers by Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. With incumbent Ken Boshcoff departing from politics, Thunder Bay is guaranteed to welcome a new mayor.

Strong mayor powers grant mayors authority over budgets, appointments, hiring and firing certain city staff, veto power on select council decisions, and the ability to enact specific bylaws with only a third of council support. Introduced in 2022 in Toronto and Ottawa, strong mayor powers have been extended to 216 municipalities that committed to fulfilling provincial housing goals.

Diedrich expressed his opposition to these powers at a media event outside Thunder Bay City Hall, emphasizing a lack of necessity for them both historically and presently. While Boshcoff obtained strong mayor powers in October 2023 but never utilized them, citing effective cooperation within the council, he acknowledged the potential use if essential for sound decision-making.

To activate strong mayor powers, the new mayor must formally notify city staff in advance. Diedrich also addressed concerns regarding his prior role as Tbaytel’s president and CEO but declined to elaborate on specific past incidents when questioned by the media.

In seeking a fresh direction for the city, Diedrich emphasized the importance of new perspectives at the council table, advocating for change and a departure from traditional long-standing practices. The upcoming municipal election on October 26 is poised to usher in significant transformations for Thunder Bay’s governance.

For detailed information on voting procedures for the forthcoming election, residents can refer to the official election resources provided by the city.
