Kettle Point Productions is set to unveil its new comedy series, Rez Cops, at a public screening event on Saturday at Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. The show, consisting of six episodes, aims to bring laughter and showcase a different aspect of life not often seen on screen.
Christina Clark from Kettle Point Productions expressed their desire to share funny and engaging stories that resonate with viewers. Leigh George, the writer and director of Rez Cops, described the series as following the journey of an enthusiastic new police recruit who finds himself stationed at his hometown precinct, craving adventure but instead encountering the quiet life of the town.
The premiere of Rez Cops will take place at the Night Sky Theatre Indigenous Arts Festival at the Kettle and Stony Point Pow Wow grounds this Saturday, alongside activities such as food vendors, round dances, and music performances. George emphasized that the show aims to highlight positivity and a crime-free community, focusing on the interactions among characters rather than crime-related plots.
To ensure sensitivity and authenticity, the creators of Rez Cops consulted with the Anishinabek Police Service in Kettle Point, assuring officers that the series is not meant to ridicule law enforcement. The production team emphasized the importance of showcasing resilience and humor within Indigenous communities, noting that laughter can be a healing force.
The event on Saturday not only marks the premiere of the show but also serves as a gesture of gratitude to the local community for their support during filming. Securing funding through an Ontario Arts Council grant and community contributions, George and Clark were able to produce the entire series, reflecting the strong community backing for the project.
The screening event will commence at 6:30 p.m., with free admission for attendees to enjoy the six 10-minute episodes starting at 9 p.m. The occasion promises to be a celebration of community collaboration and creativity, showcasing the culmination of efforts to bring Rez Cops to life.
