In a relentless exchange of attacks between Russia and Ukraine, Moscow launched ballistic missiles at Kyiv while Ukraine retaliated with hundreds of drones targeting Moscow. Despite recent efforts by the U.S. to mediate peace talks, the conflict shows no signs of abating.
On Wednesday, Russia expressed readiness to engage in talks mediated by the U.S. with Ukraine next month following discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in response to the attacks, sarcastically referred to Witkoff, who had labeled Putin as a “humanitarian” after an American prisoner in Russia was released.
Zelenskyy reported that Kyiv had been struck by three waves of ballistic missiles launched by Russian forces, causing casualties and damage across the city. Furthermore, Ukraine disclosed that Russia fired 21 ballistic missiles in three separate waves, while Russia claimed that Ukraine deployed 630 drones towards Moscow during the night.
In a gesture of goodwill, both sides exchanged war dead, with Moscow transferring 252 bodies and Ukraine handing over 25 to Belarusian authorities. These exchanges have often preceded diplomatic talks in the past.
The violence escalated with Russia conducting a significant strike on port infrastructure in Ukraine’s Odesa region and Ukrainian military vessels. Meanwhile, near Moscow, two individuals were injured by drones directed towards the capital, with Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirming most drones were intercepted at a distance. Additionally, in the Belgorod region near the Russian border, one person was killed and another wounded by Ukrainian drones.
As the conflict continues with little movement on the frontlines, both sides have intensified long-range air assaults targeting critical infrastructure. Russia has focused on disrupting the Ukrainian power grid, while Ukraine has retaliated by hitting Russian oil refineries and other strategic sites. The roots of the conflict lie in Russia’s aim to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, with demands for territorial concessions and military restrictions.
Despite diplomatic efforts, including recent meetings between Zelenskyy and Witkoff in Oslo, progress remains elusive. The Kremlin expressed skepticism about potential breakthroughs, casting doubt on the direction of negotiations. The recent tensions were compounded by the U.S. lifting sanctions on Moscow and engaging in energy deals with Russia, sparking concerns over the shifting dynamics in the region.
The ongoing conflict reflects a broader geopolitical struggle, with implications for regional stability and international relations. Efforts to de-escalate tensions and find a lasting resolution remain paramount amid the escalating violence.
