“Shabana Mahmood Slams Reform UK MPs for Missing Migration Announcement”

Shabana Mahmood has criticized Reform UK’s Members of Parliament for not attending a significant migration announcement, accusing them of making pledges that go against British values.

The Home Secretary introduced a major overhaul of settlement regulations, emphasizing that her proposals would benefit individuals who adhere to the rules. However, during her presentation, Nigel Farage and his colleagues were absent from the session.

Mahmood expressed her intention to extend the residency duration required before individuals can apply for permanent settlement. She clarified that unlike Reform UK, she would not impose changes on those already holding settled status, deeming such actions as contrary to British principles.

Emphasizing her stance, the Home Secretary assured MPs that the rules for individuals with settled status would remain unchanged. She highlighted the contributions made by long-term residents to British society, stressing the importance of honoring promises made to them.

In contrast, in September, Nigel Farage announced plans to eliminate indefinite leave to remain (ILR) if he assumes office, potentially putting numerous legal migrants at risk of deportation. Mahmood criticized Reform UK’s proposal, labeling it as un-British.

Reform UK’s agenda to replace ILR with a visa renewal every five years could jeopardize the settlement status of many residents. Mahmood’s proposed measures aim to recognize and reward individuals who contribute positively to the economy and abide by the regulations, extending the qualifying period for permanent settlement to 10-15 years.

While skilled public sector workers and high earners may receive expedited processing, others may have to wait for decades under the proposed system. Certain groups, such as those arriving on small boats or relying on benefits, could face extended waiting periods of 20-30 years before being eligible to apply for settlement.

Mahmood warned MPs about the potential consequences of uncontrolled migration, urging for responsible policies to prevent the rise of divisiveness and hatred in society. She stressed the need to demonstrate that migration can be managed effectively to preserve the essence of a diverse and inclusive Britain.

The new regulations will impact around two million individuals who have entered the country since 2021, excluding those with existing settled status.
