Sky is set to introduce a new feature called Real Time for Sky Glass and Sky Stream to reduce streaming delays, just in time for the World Cup. This upgrade aims to address the frustration many viewers face with significant latency compared to traditional broadcasts. The technology, which was initially implemented for Premier League matches in 2024, will now be extended to BBC and ITV coverage, enhancing the viewing experience for major events like the World Cup.
According to Sky, Real Time will minimize the delay between live action and on-screen display, offering a more immediate sports viewing experience. Viewers can activate this feature during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the Real Time option on their screens. The feature is available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices through an opt-in button or specific channels like BBC One HD RT and ITV channels.
Sky’s transition to Sky Glass and Sky Stream signifies a shift away from the satellite-based Sky Q platform. These services operate over broadband, providing advantages such as easy self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+. The company sees these services as pivotal in its focus on internet-delivered television and enhanced streaming experiences.
