“SNP proposes windfall tax on banks to cut energy bills”

A suggestion has been made to significantly reduce household expenses by implementing a windfall tax on commercial banks. The proposal aims to allocate funds to lower energy bills by £300. SNP Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, advocates for this plan based on a concept from the 1980s by the IPPR think tank, estimating an annual revenue of £8 billion.

Comparing their proposition to the Energy Bills Support Scheme, SNP clarified that their new plan, costing around £8.15 billion, would exclude high-income taxpayers in Scotland and elsewhere from receiving the £300 support. Flynn emphasized the importance of fulfilling promises on energy bills, contrasting Labour’s stance on bank levies and advocating for the SNP’s tax proposal.

Flynn highlighted the need to prioritize reducing energy costs over internal party conflicts, urging unity to address the issue. He criticized the government for failing to deliver on pledges to cut energy bills, emphasizing the public’s disappointment with rising expenses. The UK Government has been approached for commentary by the Press Association.
