After numerous delays, drivers will soon have access to the entire length of the Team Gushue Highway. The Newfoundland and Labrador government will officially open the highway at a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. NT on Friday at the Admiralty House Communications Museum’s annex in Mount Pearl, as per an official announcement.
The event will be attended by Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Barry Petten, Fisheries Minister Loyola O’Driscoll, MP Tom Osborne, Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker, and St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen. Notably, Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue is also anticipated to be present.
The highway, linking the west side of St. John’s to the Outer Ring Road, has been in construction for more than two decades, completed in various stages. Initially named the Bifurcation Road in 2001, the highway saw its first segment open in 2006 and was later renamed the Team Gushue Highway in honor of Brad Gushue and his curling team’s Olympic victory in Turin, Italy.
Originally slated for completion by 2014, the project faced delays and modifications over the years. Minister Petten is set to provide further insights on the opening and ongoing construction work during an interview on CBC Radio’s The St. John’s Morning Show.
