A 19-year-old teenager passed away due to a blood clot triggered by the contraceptive pill, mistakenly assuming her headache was a hangover. Áine Rose Hurst collapsed and was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital, where doctors discovered severe brain swelling before her death two days later.
Áine’s mother, Kerry Hurst, shared that her daughter had been out on a Saturday night and complained of a headache the next morning. Initially attributing it to a hangover, Kerry advised her to take paracetamol and hydrate, but the headache worsened.
During an inquest at Bolton Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that a rare complication from the contraceptive pill, which Áine had been using since 2020, led to her untimely demise. Concerns had been raised about her daughter’s blood pressure, prompting questions from the family about why she was instructed to continue the medication.
The family paid tribute to Áine, describing her as a beautiful, caring, and funny individual who enjoyed family gatherings and activities like karaoke and quizzes. They expressed deep sorrow over losing her, emphasizing the irreplaceable void left by her absence.
The medical investigation highlighted that Áine had been advised to discontinue the contraceptive pill, Femodette, after a high blood pressure reading in December 2024, only to be instructed to resume it during a subsequent GP visit. The family raised concerns about the decision-making process and sought assurances to prevent such incidents in the future.
Medical professionals involved in Áine’s care provided insights during the inquest, with differing opinions on the pill’s role in her condition. Despite conflicting assessments, the ultimate cause of death was attributed to cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, with the contraceptive pill considered a contributing factor.
The coroner deliberated on the medication’s involvement in Áine’s death, ultimately including Femodette in the medical cause of death. While acknowledging the challenges in diagnosing alternative causes during emergency care, the decision affirmed the pill’s contribution based on the available evidence.
