Three top contenders for the mayoral position are preparing to participate in the Capital Pride parade this upcoming weekend, while a fourth candidate has decided not to join. Alex Lawson cited the parade’s history of controversies as the reason for his absence, expressing that he will only engage in a related event earlier in the week.
Lawson emphasized that if the parade focused on celebrating love without division, he would gladly march alongside participants. Yet, he noted that Capital Pride has been involved in various contentious issues in recent years, leading to his decision to opt out without specifying a particular incident.
In contrast, Mark Sutcliffe, Jeff Leiper, and Neil Saravanamuttoo have confirmed their participation in the parade. Sutcliffe and Leiper intend to be part of the official City of Ottawa float, while Saravanamuttoo disclosed his registration for the parade and plans to march with his team.
Sutcliffe highlighted the importance of showing support for the struggles and victories of the LGBTQ+ community over the years, emphasizing the need for unity and backing from community leaders.
Fae Johnstone, executive director of Queer Momentum, stressed the symbolic significance of mayoral candidates marching in the parade, stating it reflects the type of mayor the community desires – one who is present and supportive of all residents. She criticized Lawson and Sutcliffe for missing a recent queer mayoral town hall, highlighting the importance of genuine engagement over symbolic gestures.
Leiper echoed the significance of visibility and validation for queer and trans individuals, pledging not only to participate in the parade but also to engage with attendees at a booth during the event. Saravanamuttoo echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the role of public figures in demonstrating support and fostering positive change.
