Toronto police have apprehended and formally accused a suspect in relation to an arson inquiry involving the destruction of multiple vehicles at the residence of a Scarborough Member of Parliament (MP) last week. Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, faces charges of arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of incendiary materials, and breaching a probation order, as announced in a press release on Friday.
The arrest and charging of Crofton transpired on Sunday, with law enforcement also seizing a vehicle believed to be linked to the incident. Authorities are currently in pursuit of a second individual connected to the case.
The alleged arson incident took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s dwelling. Zahid, a Liberal MP representing Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East since 2015, holds positions as the chair of the standing committee on science and research and the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.
The occurrence has triggered strong reactions from various political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney. Zahid expressed feeling shaken and concerned about her family and staff’s safety following the unsettling incident.
