Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community located in the Island Lake area of eastern Manitoba, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The authorities were informed about the incident when the children were brought to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station on Wednesday afternoon. Family members discovered the toddlers in a nearby lake and promptly transported them to the nursing station, where they were pronounced dead.
Initial investigations suggest that the boys wandered away from their residence and entered the lake without any signs of foul play. Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin, which represents the four First Nations in the Island Lake region, expressed condolences and highlighted the community’s support for the grieving family.
Despite efforts by the family to secure the area with a fence to prevent direct access to the water, the tragic incident has left the community in shock and sorrow. Garden Hill Anisininew Nation is situated approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
Regrettably, this marks one of five drowning fatalities in Manitoba in 2026, as reported by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito acknowledged the heart-wrenching nature of the event and emphasized the RCMP’s commitment to providing assistance and support to the affected family during this difficult time.
Hipolito extended his sympathies, acknowledging the challenges ahead for the family and the community while expressing hope that they find solace and strength to cope with the loss.
