“Triathlon Champion Jo-Anne Ritchie Joins Hall of Fame”

Jo-Anne Ritchie, a renowned figure in the world of triathlon, has recently been honored by being inducted into the World Triathlon Hall of Fame. Ritchie, a seasoned athlete whose racing career took off in the mid-’80s in Kelowna, found her passion for competition during a local race.

Known for her exceptional swimming skills, Ritchie dedicated herself to improving her biking and running abilities. She fondly recalls the support she received from the vibrant triathlon community in Kelowna, which motivated her to excel in her sport.

In 1991, Ritchie clinched her first triathlon world championship in Australia, setting the stage for more victories in the years that followed. Her achievements include securing the overall 1993 World Cup title, two Canadian championships, and podium finishes in various international competitions.

Recognized as a pioneer of women’s triathlon by World Triathlon, Ritchie modestly downplays her trailblazing status, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the possibilities for women in the sport. Despite retiring from professional racing, Ritchie continues to stay active within the community through coaching and volunteering efforts.

Furthermore, she holds the distinction of being the inaugural inductee into the Triathlon Canada Hall of Fame in 2000 and was later enshrined in the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame. While she now enjoys a more relaxed pace of life, Ritchie remains engaged in cycling and swimming activities, cherishing her enduring ties with loved ones and friends.
