Acknowledging the concerns raised by the news of the two tuberculosis cases in Behchokǫ̀, the agency emphasized that those who have not been contacted need not be alarmed about potential exposure. N.W.T. Health and Social Services, speaking on behalf of Tłı̨chǫ Community Services Agency CEO Kevin Armstrong, clarified in an email that tuberculosis does not typically spread through brief or casual interactions like shopping, community gatherings, or passing by someone in a hallway.
Armstrong emphasized that the primary risk of tuberculosis exposure lies with individuals who have had close and prolonged contact with someone actively suffering from the disease and exhibiting symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, chest discomfort, and unexplained weight loss. The agency confirmed that there is no risk of exposure in schools or other public venues, emphasizing that these places will continue to operate as usual.
Reassuring parents and residents, the notice stated that schools are safe environments for children and that public health authorities have not advised keeping children at home due to the recent tuberculosis cases. Individuals experiencing symptoms associated with tuberculosis are encouraged to contact the health center to consult with a nurse for guidance.
