A preliminary recovery strategy for individuals impacted by the recent mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge on February 10 was introduced to the District of Tumbler Ridge council during a recent meeting. Elysia Dempsey, the community recovery manager for the district, was responsible for presenting the plan. The draft plan, as outlined in the presentation, was developed in collaboration with the local community over a period of six months and is designed to establish a roadmap for short, medium, and long-term recovery efforts. Dempsey emphasized that the plan is a dynamic document that was created in partnership with a contracted consulting firm and is subject to modifications as the community’s needs and priorities evolve over time.
Dempsey shared that extensive community engagement was conducted as part of the plan’s development, including five surveys aimed at gathering input from various groups such as youth, educators, first responders, and non-profit organizations in Tumbler Ridge. Additionally, three closed group sessions were organized, and over 100 interviews were conducted with community members, along with interactions with 148 different organizations and individuals in the area. She highlighted the participation of six family members of the victims in the engagement sessions.
Regarding the community’s feedback, Dempsey mentioned that counseling services have been beneficial for many in their recovery journey, although concerns were raised about the availability of temporary services and rotating providers. She emphasized that privacy issues, stigma, and the fear of reliving traumatic experiences have posed challenges for some residents. Dempsey emphasized the importance of supporting families through their waves of grief and uncertainty, with the plan containing recommendations to assist during critical milestones and high-demand periods in the community.
Youth in Tumbler Ridge have expressed a desire to remain actively involved in the recovery process, according to Dempsey, who added that after-hours school programs have been introduced for them. The youth have also indicated interest in therapy dogs, year-round recreational activities, and art programs. Mayor Darryl Krakowka stressed the significance of engaging and listening to the youth during the recovery phase, acknowledging the wealth of information gathered to progress the recovery plan. Dempsey highlighted the community’s emphasis on maintaining a sense of normalcy through regular social events and connections, beyond focusing solely on the tragic event.
Furthermore, Dempsey addressed additional community needs identified, including combating burnout among first responders and volunteers, supporting 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, addressing transportation challenges, and creating more indoor winter gathering spaces. She mentioned the necessity for continued community discussions regarding the town’s memorial for the victims, emphasizing the families’ desire to contribute to the memorial’s progression and commemoration process.
